Getting lost in the woods of Maine and New Hampshire can become a major problem in a hurry.  Every year, sportsmen enter the field and lose their way causing themselves, their families, friends, and law enforcement a substantial amount of stress and expense.  This one day class is designed to give you the confidence that only comes from knowing where you are, and how to get to and from a specific location with ease.

Careful reading of topographical maps has long been a secret of legendary hunting and fishing guides in Northern New England.  Knowing where trophy animals and fish hide, and locating those areas on a map can increase your potential for success.

Along with classroom teaching and planning, we will use our map and compass to trek across several hundred acres and back to the parking area.  Come learn a new skill and gain the knowledge you need to stay safe!

This class that will cover:

  • Compass selection
  • Terminology
  • Topographical map reading (symbols, legend, contour index, datum, etc.)
  • Course bearing and declination calculations
  • Latitude and Longitude
  • Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) calculations
  • Triangulation
  • By-pass navigation
  • Lateral drift and aiming off
  • Determine route and distance w/ maps
  • Using maps to find trophy animals
  • Global Positioning Systems
  • Google earth
  • And more!

Items required for this class are the Loudon and Center Sandwich 1:24,000 scale maps, a clear baseplate compass with rotating bezel, and protractor with UTM Grid reader.  We provide all equipment and maps for the class, you are not required to purchase the equipment to take the class. If you wish, students may purchase these from us at a discounted rate or online through various vendors such as Amazon.com prior to or after the class.
