Description
The drumming Ruffed Grouse, the whistling Woodcock, and the call of a Green Wing Teal are just a few of the sounds that speak straight the heart of a bird hunter. When you complete this course you will have an intimate knowledge of New England’s most popular upland game birds and waterfowl, and how to hunt them. This class is divided into two sections. First, a comprehensive overview of Grouse and Woodcock biology, habitat, and hunting techniques. The second session is an advanced study of ducks and geese that frequent the inland ponds, puddles and rivers of Maine and New Hampshire. Strong emphasis is placed on duck identification (on the water and in the air), blind location and selection, decoy set-ups, and calling techniques.
In this class, you will learn the following:
- Ruffed Grouse vs Spruce Grouse identity
- Woodcock (migration, seasons, bag limits, etc.)
- Ducks (identification by sound and sight, calls and calling)
- Habitat and food sources
- Unique behaviors of each species
- Hunting techniques
- Duck decoy set-ups
- Duck calling techniques
- Clothing considerations
- Shotgun and load selection
- Various dog breeds used for hunting
Then…its out to the field for a simulated duck hunt. Bring lots of shells and a sense of humor as sporting clays will be flying in from all angles while you shoot from two duck blinds. This session will hone your shooting skills for the upcoming season and add a whole new meaning to the two little words “TAKE “EM!”
